Academy at FSU Dulcimer Group

In 2001, a group of members decided they would like to learn to play the dulcimer. We had some members who were already skilled dulcimer enthusiasts and they agreed to teach and form a group for any one interested.

The word dulcimer is thought to be derived from the Greek word “dulce” which means sweet, and the Latin word “melos” which means song. The Appalachian Dulcimer, which our group plays should not be confused with the hammered dulcimer. It is an old American stringed instrument which derived from the German Scheithlot, played in Pennsylvania in the 1700’s.

It has seen a recent revival in the mountains and hollows of the Appalachian area as well as in country and folk music in general. There are many different styles and shapes of dulcimers that proudly reflect the craftsmen who make them.

The dulcimer is supposed to be one of the easiest stringed instruments to learn to play. The dulcimer sits on our lap and we strum it or play with a pick.

In less than a year our group was ready for our first public concert. We proudly played Christmas music at the Academy Christmas party. It is difficult to say what the audience enjoyed more – our music, or seeing us all wearing our reindeer antlers.

For the last year our group has been led by John Stimel, and once again we are preparing for a Christmas performance.
