RV Trips

Dale and I have had many wonderful times traveling in our RV with our critters. Our first RV, in 1995, was a twenty foot, type C and we really enjoyed it.

It was small enough to drive anywhere so we never had to tow an extra vehicle. We even drove it through the picturesque narrow streets of Charleston. The over the cab bed was comfortable and all the windows around let us enjoy falling asleep and waking up to some beautiful views.

However, two years later a great opportunity came along to buy a 34 foot type A in good condition and at the right price. We have been using it ever since and the extra space is great, especially now that our family has increased to three critters.

However, it does require a great deal of upkeep and Dale spends many hours keeping it finely tuned and in good condition. He has replaced the generator, air conditioning, and refrigerator. He has rewired it and made it self sufficient with extensive battery installations. He has redone the ceiling, carpeting and flooring.

The self-sufficient, self-contained aspects are important to us as we do not like commercial campgrounds with all the amenities. We much prefer more natural, pristine, little populated environments. We like mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, and forests. Both of us enjoy doing some fishing. Also the colder the temperature is, the better we like it, which doesn’t always make for the best fishing.

Although our preference is to get away to isolated areas that are cool and mountainous, we have had some wonderful beach experiences also. We have enjoyed a couple of New Years Eves on Edisto beach in South Carolina.

We have also had some family get-togethers and celebrations at Hannah Park on the beach in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dale and Tom had more fun than big catches surf fishing.

It was a great time and place for celebrating Mom’s birthday

This unwelcome guest tried to participate in the fun.

Every year we visit Dale’s family in Mississippi.

One year, after visiting Shannon, Brian, and Vance while they lived in Milledgeville, Georgia we discovered a covered bridge state park in northern Georgia.

We have enjoyed two other beach locations. One was Jeckyl Island in Georgia. The park was quiet and secluded and we rode our bicycles all around the island.

We also enjoyed a few days on Sanibel Island in Florida. The natural wildlife is abundant there, especially in the Jim Darling Wildlife Preserve.

Whenever possible we head north from Tallahassee. One of our first adventures out of state landed us at Poteete Creek. It was a TVA project park north of Blue Ridge, Georgia. It had wooded sites ascending a hill overlooking a beautiful lake. We were the only ones there and it was a happy memorable trip.

We visited several beautiful places close to this site.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

We spent another Fall vacation in Great Smokey Mountain National Park and enjoyed many day trips in the park and to Gatlinburg. The weather was cool and the campground almost empty.

Kerry Shamrock in Great Smokey Mountain National Park.

Our campsite was on this beautiful creek.

The following fall we ventured even further, this time traveling the full length of the Blue Ridge Parkway to Shenandoah National Park.

Deer pranced through our site all the time even though Molly tried to chase them away.

Keeping the RV level in the mountains is not always easy.

Keeping KC warm was another challenge.

We spent one Christmas at High Falls State Park in Georgia.

Dale cooked one of the most delicious Christmas dinners we have ever enjoyed.

Molly and Moses thought it was a great Christmas too.

KC stayed inside and could not be coaxed into the Christmas spirit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We usually do not have enough time to venture very far from home.  We have discovered some fantastic Army Corp. of Engineers campgrounds on the Georgia-Alabama border.

Since we go off season we usually have these parks and beautiful lake sites all to ourselves.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another Christmas vacation we took a side trip into Eufala and enjoyed the area of town where the people decorate their homes in turn of the century traditions.

After several trips to these beautiful lake sites we decided we could extend our fun by getting out on the water in a boat. We purchased a small inflatable boat and motor and had a great time. We moved up to Coast Guard strength inflatable and have loved every minute we have been in it.

Thanksgiving 2002 Kara, Dennis, and Ashley joined us at Suwannee River State Park. We all enjoyed a wonderful boat ride on the river and a week-end of camping.
