Tom and Mary
Tom and Mary were married in Dublin, Ireland in 1988. I have always enjoyed Tom’s version of the story of how they met and will include it here with a few notes of my own. Tom was stationed in Sicily with the United States Air Force. At that time I was a single mom and working very hard to make ends meet. I had set up a new business, in addition to my hospital nursing work. It involved matching young girls from Ireland with families in South Florida who needed an aupair or nanny to care for their young children. At that time, young women from Ireland could come to the US on a one year tourist visa, earn a little money, and do some traveling. They were very honest and dependable care givers. Usually three or four girls came at a time so I placed them together in a hotel while I trained them for the next three weeks, before they were assigned to the family they would be working with. I had interviewed Mary in Dublin and she wanted to do this and I was very impressed with her. However, she was already working and could not come as part of a group so I consented to Mary coming by herself at a later date. Since Tom was away in the Air Force I thought Mary would feel safer staying with us in his empty room while we accomplished her training. While she was there Tom got an unexpected leave and came home. Thus his story of their meeting is that he came home from the Air Force and his mom had this beautiful Irish lass waiting for him in his room.
Mary worked over a year for the family she was assigned to and shortly after that she and Tom were married. They bought a little house in South Miami and Mary worked very hard for Norwegian Caribbean Cruise Lines while Tom worked as a chef and went to nursing school. An occasional bonus cruise during these difficult years helped them get through.
Tom worked several years at Miami Children’s Hospital. In 2003 he accepted a position at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and works in the Emergency Room there. He and Mary are building a new home outside of Nashville, Tn. and enjoying the change from Miami.
Tom and Mary both enjoy traveling and going to concerts and sporting events. They share great times with their friends and Tom is an avid fisherman. They tend to enjoy many trips in and on the water
