Stephen William Bardill
My dad was born in Highland, Illinois in 1910. He was raised with his parents, and his brother Vern, and sister Jewel. My dad, the youngest, was referred to as quite spirited, and a bit of a risk taker (somewhat like his own dad). He graduated from high school and tried several kinds of jobs. One he seemed to like very much was in a tool and dye shop in Toledo, Ohio. About the time he and mom married in 1935, the business was about to fold, and my dad managed to buy it. Shortly after that the United States was engaged in World War II and his little shop was making a part used by our military aircraft. His little business could hardly keep up with the demand and financially he did very well.
He began to invest in oil and soon found this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, drill for oil. He sold the tool and dye business and started his own company and did wild cat drilling for oil in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. There were many dry holes but enough gushers to make this a successful venture for him. He continued with this until his bad health necessitated his semi-retirement in about 1957, and his complete retirement in 1965 My dad had a profoundly strong and positive influence on my life.
